I ALMOST Can’t Believe How Bad:
MyPin Fingerprint Lock

This is the lock begin lawyer and what I have for you today is a my pin brand fingerprint padlock. I bought this on Amazon for 45 dollars, where a few things caught my eye. The first was the housing which they say is made of aluminum aluminum is stronger, lighter and more expensive than the zinc alloy found on most of its competitors.

Now I didn’t do any tests, but this just feels too heavy to be aluminum, which is about half the weight of zinc. But what caught my eye, at least for testing, was the advertised Bluetooth functionality, because the necessity that the Bluetooth antenna be outside this metal housing?

Often leads inexperienced security Engineers to make mistakes, so the most obvious place to look for the antenna is under this plastic front panel, so we’re going to pry it up and see. What’s underneath, ideally, we’ll see an antenna mounted on a solid metal panel with only a very small hole in a carefully selected location, so I’m going to use a small screwdriver to pry this up.

Okay, that came off pretty easily, though I should note that the first time I did it, I broke off a couple of these little hooks, though it does reattach firmly, so I doubt the owner would notice now. Obviously, there was pretty much no effort made to protect the innards. I could disassemble this further, but there’s not really a point, because I can just reach in and push aside that locking lever there.

We go that popped right open. Let’S do it one more time. Okay, folks, it seems this lock was made a lot more like an electronic toothbrush or some other Consumer Electronic than a security device, and because of that it should definitely be avoided.
