When Quantity Adds Quality: Curt Trailer Lock

This is the lock picking lawyer and it’s often said that quantity has a quality all its own and that’s what immediately came to mind when I saw this Kurt brand trailer, coupler lock, sent in by Daniel in Bergen New York now by any objective standard, the wafer Core that holds this closed is a terrible product. It can be raked or jiggled open in just a few seconds. However, the core needs to be rotated about three turns before the shackle opens and it relocks every quarter turn. That means this needs to be picked 10 or 12 times, so the delay this lock provides is actually equivalent to a lock qualitatively Superior now. Does that make a practical difference?

Well we’re about to find out, but my inclination is to say probably not we’re still talking about roughly one minute to open this with a low skill attack. So let’s give it a try. I’M going to use a turning tool and wave rake that are part of the Genesis set. I of course sell these over on covertinstruments.com we’re putting the Turning tool in the bottom of the keyway and we’re going to lightly rake on the wafers.

Okay, that’s the first pick, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth still not open 11th. There we go, and now we can get this off. Okay, folks, even with the number of times we had to pick it as a matter of technique, it was still pretty easy to open. That said, given the time it took, there is no doubt that the quantity in this case the number of times we had to pick this – has a quality all its own. In any case, that’s all I have for you today.
