Be Careful What You Wish For: Smonet Smart Lock

This is the lock picking lawyer and when I was far too young, I was introduced to a horrific short story called the monkey’s paw. I won’t burden you with the plot, but the takeaway can be distilled down to a single warning. Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it that story comes to mind. Whenever I get emails from the makers of questionable locks asking me to feature their products, I usually skip over those emails wondering if they’ve ever seen one of my videos but the one sent by smonet or smonee the maker of this 150 Smart, Lock caught my eye. The email noted the company is selling around 40 000 of these locks a year.

Well, if it’s that popular, I had best take a look. I should start by noting that the lock setup requires installation of a smartphone app something I refuse to do for privacy reasons. So while this does have fingerprint numeric code and RFID functionality, my review is limited to the mechanical core and I think you’ll agree in a moment that is more than enough to show this lock is unacceptable at any price point. Let me show you what I mean: I’m going to take a turning tool and wave rake from the Genesis set that I sell over on covertinstruments.com place that in the bottom of the keyway, it’s actually the top with the way this lock is oriented, we’re just going To scrub over those pins lightly – and you can see in just a moment or two – this lock should open up.

Let’S do that a few more times so you can see it was not a fluke even faster.
