THIS Was Their Design Change?!? (Image Lock)

The lock industry has seen various design changes over the years, with companies like Master and Abus attempting to address the most significant security flaws in their padlocks. However, other companies have taken a different approach, as exemplified by the Image Lock, sent in by Randall from Blackfoot, Idaho.

The makers of the Image Lock opted to leave the security flaws untouched and instead replaced the numbers with emojis, such as a sad monkey, a surprised alien, and the fan favorite – happy feces. While this change might seem amusing, it has reduced the number of possible combinations from around 64,000 down to approximately 1,700, arguably making the lock less secure. However, given the lock’s initial lack of security, the impact might not be too significant.

In this article, we demonstrate two easy methods to open the Image Lock. First, we pick the override cylinder on the back using a 50,000 thick turner and a standard hook, both part of the Genesis set available on covertinstruments.com. After picking the lock, we close it back up and show the fastest way in – using a padlock shim. By slipping the shim between the lock body and the shackle on the left side, the shackle can be pulled open with ease.

This design should have been discontinued decades ago, but as long as new companies insist on recreating it, we suggest focusing design efforts on fixing actual security flaws rather than adding pictures of poo.
