Revised Master M176—New Open Method!

Last week, I received two emails about the Master Lock model 176 Magnum, with both mentioning that they couldn’t fit a shim in the bottom to bypass the lock. Naturally, I was curious, as I haven’t paid much attention to this model since featuring it seven years ago. I decided to compare the older version I had bought back then with a new one I just purchased.

Those familiar with the older version will know that it can be bypassed quickly using a notch decoder, which I sell on CovertInstruments.com. This tool can be used to slip between the lock body and a code wheel, then pushing down on the shackle and shim to pop the lock open.

However, with the new version of the Master Lock model 176 Magnum, the process is slightly different. The tolerances on the bottom appear to be tighter, making it more challenging to insert the decoder. Despite this, it is still possible to bypass the lock using the same method.

Interestingly, although Master Lock has tightened the tolerances on the bottom of the lock, a significant gap at the top remains. To exploit this gap, I modified a medium hook from the Genesis set by adding a bend to it. By using this tool to lift up the locking bar, the lock can still be opened just as easily.

In conclusion, while Master Lock has made a minor change to the model 176 Magnum, it does little to overcome the potent and fundamental flaws in the design.
