Qwirkle and 12 Days: Kelly Hu, Meredith Salenger, and Nolan Kopp join Wil on TableTop

Christmas time is here time for joy and cheer time to find anything to do that will save you from listening to that one crazy uncle go on and on about black helicopters and keep your weird little cousins out of your mint-in-package action figures today on tabletop Kelly, Who Meredith Salinger and my stepson Nolan are here to save you from that awkward family dinner, with a pair of delightful games that are simple to learn, quick to play and accessible to everyone from little kids to cynical adults, grab the nog of your choice and pour Me a double shot of whiskey, it’s 12 days and quark forkel is an abstract tile, laying game designed by Susan McKinlay Ross it sort of plays like dominoes and it sort of scores like Scrabble. Each player will have a rack of six tiles. Tiles have one of six shapes and one of six colors on your turn. You can play tiles from your hand onto the board in a single row. A row can have either all the same shape or all the same color.

So this is a row of green and then this is a row of ninja stars. There is a special rule. You cannot repeat a tile in the same line, so the maximum size for any line is six tiles long. This complete row of six tiles is called a corkle when someone finishes a row like this, they get six bonus points for rocking the corkle. That is a technical term.

It is in the rules. When your turn is done, you will draw back up to six tiles from the bag of holding and play will pass to the left. You score points for each tile in a row or rows you created, for example. This is three points, but this is one two. Three four five points we play until one player is out of tiles.

Then we add up all of our points and the player with the highest score wins if it wasn’t a made-up name. I would have something hilarious to say about it. It’S time to play corkle. I’M Nolan and I am will stepson and I am a personal trainer and nutrition counselor. My name is Meredith Salinger, I’m an actress, I guess I’m best known for the journey of natty Gann.

My name is Kelly, Who I am an actress, probably best known for my roles and x-men x-men United X, x-men United. You think I get the title right right now. This is corkle. It is the first of the two games we’re playing today, and so you guys know corkle and 12 days are both scoring games right. So, at the end of the day, the ultimate winner will be determined by who has the most cumulative points of both games of both games.

So, that’s that’s how we’re doing it today and quirk of the player who can make the most points at the beginning of the game goes. First, we have determined that that is narrative, so go ahead and make your first play. Okay, that is three points from Meredith and now you can redraw three points out of the bag of holding I’m going to play four points in a row of ninja stars and no one, it’s your turn. Oh, I thank you actually for making that move. If you watch tabletop, you will now know that victory is not genetic redraw, nice good work, okay, Kelly, crappy tiles, it happens.

I know this is the only thing I can do. I think that’s genius. That’S is that good? Yes, you get for cash and then, if no one wasn’t wrecking the curve, you would be right within the average. I have a feeling Nolan’s a lucky bastard.

Well, he does get to live and grow up with me. Yeah. I’M really excited to be playing this game with Nolan, because this is a game that we play at home and no one’s not really a gamer like his brother Ryan, is so finding a game that appeals to him makes me really really happy, and I hope it’s An example to people at home watching this game there’s a game for everyone. You just have to find it. I’M just gon na.

I seriously is that I can’t that’s right. Hey your mom has the same problem at this game. Yeah. I that you guys are colorblind yeah, my wife, my wife and both of our kids are colorblind. It’S a little difficult because, as you know, that shades are pretty similar and I just I can’t tell what’s what’s where okay, this is the only thing I have.

I can do it here. I was gon na. Do it there, but I can do it here trying to keep. I don’t think she should be able to even keep that’s crazy, double corkle. I think she’s cheating.

Now we just got ta play catch-up here. It goes. This is the move that I’m doing, and I’m doing this just to be a dick. Ah crap wait. Can you do that?

Can you separate your guys, yeah cuz they’re in a line, okay, yeah, but I’m just correcting these rows, so you guys can’t quirk. Look so cuz if I can’t poco that nobody can work on every move and quarrel can be offensive and defensive right. So offensively, you’re scoring points for yourself and defensively you’re, preventing other people from being set up to score points for themselves. So corkle blocking is a legitimate and important strategy in the game. I’M gon na do that.

Instead, so that’s gon na be one two three four five points, I’m not good at math and I am just terrible ajun. No I’ll tell you why I’ll tell you why it is it’s because Nolan is so good at math, and this is all the way back to like second grade the better Nolan got at doing basic arithmetic in his head. The I got it doing it in mind because it was like. I had a calculator with me all the time. I love that human calculator yeah I’d, say I’m better at a lot of things and we’ll, but math is definitely one of them.

Okay, I have this. Oh nice, three, four, five, six, seven points for as good as 26. You should all know that Meredith is kicking. Our Kelly has 13 Meredith has 42 what I have 20 in no 1s. 28.

That’S just luck. Yeah part of the basic economy of core coal is maximizing points per tile played Meredith just got 26 points for two tiles. It just math says it’s gon na be really hard for anyone else to win this game. Okay. 42.

You’Re up! I know this is very what if you can’t go you pass, you just have to pass. You can trade child’s right, you can trade tiles, but it’s generally not a good move to do that and it is in all the times I play this. I’Ve never had a player not able to take to play something, even if it’s only one tiles. So, oh, what’s about to happen, why are you playing that?

That’S not exciting at all. That’S four points, but it does make wait. You know what I’m gon na. Do it like this, so it makes a stop light. I love that.

You know all that curses. Oh wait! Okay, I can do that yeah, yeah, okay, okay, wait and that and that okay uh-huh you all do do me pretty want these to go with that green purple like that yeah yeah! Oh, look at you all right! Wait!

It’S it’s so unfair. I need to get a corkle in this game or I’m out for sure. Okay, okay, I still haven’t gone. I still haven’t gone. I know I know I know I know I know well as long as you know.

I know oh, this is so dumb to leave a corkle open for someone, but I’ll be generous one of the four five six seven. Oh I just looked at.

Because I am an evil queen mm-hmm. I am going to quickl somebody with these rings. They give me special corkle powers, you’re the original Snow White movie and she’s the new ones for mighty points. For me, screwed in the pooch you totally screwed me. I have to say that screwing, you is not as exciting as what a big, no idea will you just quark will block to me.

Oh blocking is like, when you tell your roommate, to get the hell out of the apartment, because you’re bringing home five tiles – and you are finally gon na – get some quark all after weeks of not quickly even a little bit, not even by yourself. And then you get home and you’re like all right here we can. What are you doing on the couch why’d? You core clock me you’re, not even supposed to be in this game, you’re a dick.

I am so competitive. I don’t know how you did it, but somehow you corkle bought me Kelly. I didn’t think you had it in you. I am so competitive that I cannot play table games with my family because it’s very bad for our relationship. We’Re gon na have to believe you.

Go play to go: okay, okay, here, here’s my to still our own quickl. This is that a stupid to know, I think, that’s a lot to know you’re about to get this is my magic tile. That’S gon na give me points to win this entire game. Unless somebody blocks, oh, they can’t block me. Can they can they can like this window to get a coracle?

You didn’t take it boom, your block, you built up a huge and then having a huge leave, spent the rest of the game. Just trolling. You know what you are you’re nice Snow White is where you are you’re a cat and we’re dead birds eat me now. I was so close to getting my first core coal. Like I want a core coal.

I want a quirk. Well, I just just one I’d be happy with just one in this game and Meredith blocks me yeah, so four for me and there’s nothing left in the bag, so the first person who gets rid of all their tiles get six points. Also, I’m I’m taking some big risks by holding on to my tiles. I’Ve got here. So that’s four, for you know one it’s all you’re gon na do I thought you were gon na help me out man there’s opportunities for like two or three quick holes and I’m hoping that they have no strategy and will set me up.

It’S a huge risk, but I’m willing to take it. Hmm. Are you such an angry face? I am angry. Ah, oh wait.

I can oh look at that. That’S good! I just don’t want to come in last, so my entire strategy right now is to beat, will and possibly Nolan. Is that really the best you can have revealing the game was over after, like six, you got double cork over then. Oh, that’s good!

You’Re up, I think I really only have one place to put this and if you block me I will kill, not block and you caught him kill me split that on the star you want it that way or that way it doesn’t matter cuz it’s right. Sixteen, oh, I can’t believe I finally got my first quirk. Oh, I waited the entire game, it was like almost my last and it was almost my last hand before I finally got a cork roll marry one. I have two tiles left and normally I’d be like I’m done. I’M out, but both of mine are the exact same. So I know I can’t go out with these two, but next time around one now, one later, I’m out first before everybody.

Oh look at that, and that drops me into last place. Okay, so probably that huh Wheaton oh shoot, can I change my thing. Nope down your fingers came on. I don’t have to it’s a matter of one point really do I need it go ahead. I have completely changed my strategy.

I am now trying not to come in last yeah come on. Can you ninja star that diamond right here, like this yeah, all right, that’s 4 points for Nolan. Is it my go? Yep? Oh, my god.

Are you about to go out? I think I am purple over there and I get more points we’re going out where no you want to go there. Yeah, that’s a legal move, just doesn’t touch it like thirty, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven twelve points nice play so surprised that she put two down. I thought I was going out first, but kudos to her very proud of her. I still won, which you at home can’t see is that behind the camera as the losers couch – and it’s looking at me right now going soon soon, all right, final, congratulations, final scores for quark ole Meredith, with a hundred and nineteen Charlie with a hundred and three Wow Nolan with ninety one and the big shocker of the day is, will with 81.

These points will carry over we’re gon na play twelve days, and then whoever has the most points at the end. Just today’s tabletop we’ll be right back with 12 days. Corkle blocks 12 days is a trick-taking bidding game designed by my friends, James earnest and Mike sell incur. This is a holiday themed card game with all the presents that our true love’s gave to us on Christmas. We will open 12 rounds of presents one for each day of Christmas, hence the clever name, and then we will score at the end for setup, we deal out 12 presents to each player and place these shiny victory cards in the center of the table.

Interesting point: you will notice that in the deck there are actually 12 12 s – 11 11 s, 10, tens and so on the rarer. The present meaning the lower the number, the more powerful it is in winning that day, we’ll take a card from our hand, play it face down like this, and when everyone is ready, reveal the lowest number wins the day. In the case of a tie, the next lowest wins the winner of the day takes this card here worth this many points. Finally, we will all draw back up to 12 cards. We’Ll do this 12 times one for each day again that clever name after the 12th round we’re going to score.

We get points for winning each trick, but we also get bonus points. Whoever has the most card of a number will earn that many bonus points. So the most fives, it’s 5 points, the most sixes earned 6 points, and so on you get it. Basically, you earn points for winning tricks, but also for collecting sets the player. Who can do both usually wins.

The game get ready to have a song stuck in your head for the rest of the day. It’S time to play 12 days, it’s the first day of Christmas, everyone and now we’re gon na open some presents so give a present to the player on your left. No one, you can just slide a card across to Kelly, and now we are all going to bid on this present that comes out on the first day of Christmas. So take your bid card and place it out here like this, that nobody can see it. This is a trick-taking game.

You want low cards in your hand to take tricks. The lowest cards in my hand, is a pair of eights. I lose ready, we’re gon na turn our cards over now. 12. 6.

At least I got a point which makes it you know better than not having anything at all. Kelly just won the first day Christmas, not a huge deal, it’s a single point. What’S that gon na do for a point. When you’re, drunk and now everyone it’s the second day of Christmas, it’s a lovely day on the second day of Christmas. So let me pass a card to you. Nolan, can you make your cards less likely to beat there? You go really like that. Yeah you play poker, though right yeah, but when I play poker, it’s like this right right right I mean it’s, not ya, know I can watch on the second day of Christmas.

We all played out our cards and when we flipped them over high cards, it turns out that she figured out that she’s been over bidding. Things are continuing to not look good for me. You guys are saving it. Aren’T you you’re saving it and I’ve already blew my wad we’re not trying to get lots of points. Everything you say is dirty it’s.

Okay, it’s the third day of Christmas. Everyone, let’s open gifts, ready, wait; okay, wait, okay, all right, ready, twelve, seven, twelve, ten, seven Nolan you in the third day of Christmas, I’m very concerned I’m looking at my opening hand, and I see four Elevens, I’m like hmm. They call it like the 12 days, the eight days right, yeah, yeah funnest, which one about that game is that you draw one card and you use it to set all the other cards on fire and the cards burn the entire time you play and it’s America. You were you were in the boat. I was hanging you up to take a picture again, just a news. It is the fourth day of Christmas, everybody. We must pass we’re gon na pass cards.

So we do this thing in my family, where we do a white elephant gift every Christmas and one of the white elephant gifts that just continually get sent around is the bacon wave. It’S a crime against nature, because first of all, bacon is something that should be prepared in a very specific kind of important fashion, because bacon is because bacon is a special treat. He is a writer yeah, I’m a bacon kind of sewer.

I have a membership in the bacon of the Month Club, my goodness there’s other than one bacon. There’S a bacon of the Month. Packages of bacon come in the mail and they just show up. Man will is a connoisseur of bacon. He knows how to cook the out of that bacon.

Bacon is a delicacy, Bacon’s bad for you. So when you make it, you should do it right. You don’t put it up microwave if you put bacon in the microwave and think that you get that you deserve. What comes out of your microwave all right on the sixth day of Christmas, my Truelove bid on this um. Okay, no, no wait!

That’S what I would like for Christmas. I think it would be great all right now we’re gon na bid on the eighth day of Christmas ready flip. I got 200. We made him spend the three all right. That’S quite important Joyce I needed that.

Okay! Well, you haven’t gotten a single point, yet that’s correct! Oh and now we pass. Oh the strategy. Pretty far into the game, he’s got it he’s, got ta win something, and I don’t know if it’s gon na happen.

So by the way, all there’s only one more form they cancel each other out because we all play them. Yeah I’ve been waiting all game to draw something lower than a 5, and I have the four and I think I’ve chosen the right time to play it. Everybody else plays it and Meredith gets the trick.
