The Blue Crab Bounces Back — Chesapeake Bay, 2026
After several worrying years, the Chesapeake's most famous crustacean is having a good one. The 2026 annual winter dredge survey — run jointly by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science — estimated a total of 349 million blue crabs in the bay, a 46% increase over the previous year and the highest figure since 2019. The count of juvenile crabs came in at 228 million, also a post-2019 high, which is the number that matters most for what the next few seasons look like.
The Chesapeake is the largest estuary in the United States, running roughly 200 miles from Maryland down into Virginia near Washington DC, and it supports more than 3,600 plant and animal species. The blue crab is both a keystone of that food web and a cornerstone of the region's culture. Its recent decline had several causes at once: surface water temperatures in the bay have risen about 1.8°F over the past 30 years, winters have swung colder in ways crabs dislike, and invasive blue catfish — introduced in the 1970s for recreational fishing — dig up and eat dormant crabs year-round. Overfishing, by contrast, was addressed: the 2026 Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Assessment and Advisory report found no overfishing in the bay under the catch limits set by the two states.
The habitat news ran the same direction. Maryland's latest survey found underwater seagrass in its portion of the bay and tidal tributaries expanded from 36,799 acres in 2024 to 41,419 acres in 2025 — close to 13% in a single year — with bay-wide coverage reaching an estimated 89,385 acres, up 7% from 83,252. Seagrass beds are where juvenile crabs hide, so more grass and more young crabs are not a coincidence. Crab numbers move abruptly and one good survey is not a guarantee, but this one is worth sitting with.
