Giant's Causeway Basalt Columns

On the north coast of County Antrim, Northern Ireland, the land ends in something that looks deliberately built. Tens of thousands of stone columns — most of them six-sided, packed edge to edge like a cobbled road — step down off the headland and disappear under the sea. The commonly cited count is around 40,000 columns. Walking out onto them is the rare kind of landscape moment where your first instinct is to check whether a person made it.

Nobody did. The Causeway is what happens when a thick flood of lava cools slowly and evenly. As the molten rock loses heat it contracts, and the contraction cracks propagate down through the flow in a pattern that packs the surface most efficiently — which is why so many of the columns come out hexagonal, the same reason a honeycomb does. The lava here erupted during the Paleogene, roughly 50 to 60 million years ago, and the sea has been trimming the columns back ever since. The older explanation is better company, though: the giant Finn McCool built a road across to Scotland, and the matching columns at Fingal's Cave on Staffa are the far end of it. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

Why are the Giant's Causeway columns hexagonal?
They are cooling cracks. As a thick lava flow loses heat it shrinks, and the resulting fractures spread down through the rock in whatever pattern releases the stress most efficiently. For slow, even cooling that pattern is close to a hexagonal grid — the same packing logic that shapes a honeycomb. Columns with five or seven sides show up wherever the cooling was less regular.
