Kākāpō's Record Breeding Season
The kākāpō is the world's rarest, heaviest, and only flightless parrot — a nocturnal, ground-dwelling bird native to New Zealand and still critically endangered. Intensive island sanctuary management has rebuilt the adult population to roughly 235 known birds, each carefully monitored by the Department of Conservation's recovery programme after decades near extinction.
The 2026 breeding season became the biggest on record for the species. Driven by an exceptional rimu fruiting year, dozens of females nested on predator-free islands and more than 100 chicks hatched — surpassing the previous high from 2019. Chicks are not added to the official adult tally until they reach independence (around 150 days), so the season's true lift to the global population will show later, but the hatch count alone marks a landmark for recovery.
This free Animals jigsaw on PuzzleBeat celebrates that conservation milestone. Rebuild Kākāpō's Record Breeding Season at your own pace — choose your piece count and play instantly in your browser with no download or account required.

Frequently asked questions
- What makes the kākāpō unique among parrots?
- Kākāpō are the only flightless parrot species, and they are also the world's heaviest. Native to New Zealand, they are nocturnal, moss-green, and critically endangered, with an adult population of roughly 235 known birds.
- Why was the recent breeding season a record?
- An outstanding rimu mast (fruit boom) triggered widespread nesting. Conservation teams recorded the highest number of hatchings in the programme's history — more than 100 chicks — beating the previous record season.
- How are kākāpō protected in New Zealand?
- Birds live on carefully managed, predator-free island sanctuaries. Rangers and scientists use nest monitoring, supplementary feeding, disease management, and sometimes assisted breeding so each generation has the best chance to survive.
