Lavender Field at Sunset

The lavender fields of Provence, France bloom in long, tidy rows from roughly mid-June through early August, turning entire valleys a deep violet-blue. Farmers plant the rows close together and keep them low and rounded, both for ease of harvest and to concentrate the fragrant oil the plant is famous for.

Sunset is when these fields are at their most photogenic. As the sun drops toward the horizon, its warm light rakes across the tops of the lavender, throwing long shadows between the rows and turning the purple blooms almost gold at the edges. Photographers often time visits specifically for this last hour of light, sometimes called the golden hour.

As a puzzle, the repeating rows give the solver a helpful rhythm to lock onto, while the gradient from warm gold sky to cool purple flowers adds just enough subtlety to keep the pieces from being too easy to sort by color alone. It's a relaxing scene that rewards a patient, unhurried solve.
