Misty Mountain Lake at Dawn

Dawn is when mountain lakes are at their stillest. Overnight cooling settles the air, and as the sun begins to warm the water's surface faster than the surrounding land, a thin layer of mist lifts off the lake and drifts against the base of the peaks. The effect only lasts an hour or two before the day's warmth burns it off completely.

This kind of scene is common in high-altitude lake basins, where cold night air pools near the water and steep terrain blocks early wind that would otherwise scatter the fog. Photographers chase these conditions specifically, often arriving well before sunrise to catch the brief window when mist, light, and stillness align.

As a puzzle, the soft gradients of fog and reflected light make for a gentler, more meditative solve than a high-contrast scene — pieces separate by subtle shifts in tone rather than sharp edges, rewarding a slower, more careful approach. It's a good one to work through with a cup of coffee rather than race against a clock.
