Pamukkale Travertine Terraces

In Turkish, Pamukkale means "cotton castle," and the hillside above the Menderes valley in Denizli Province earns the name from a distance. A white shelf spills off the slope in overlapping basins and lips, each one holding a shallow pool of water so pale it reads as mint or sky depending on the hour. There is no snow involved and no paint. The entire terrace is rock that the water itself is still building, layer by thin layer, as it has done for thousands of years.

The mechanism is simple chemistry running very slowly. Warm spring water rises through limestone underground and arrives at the surface loaded with dissolved calcium bicarbonate. The moment it hits open air it starts shedding carbon dioxide, and what it can no longer hold in solution it drops as calcium carbonate — travertine. Every rim where water spills over becomes the place where the most mineral settles out, so the rims grow upward faster than the floors, and over time each pool builds its own retaining wall. The same springs made the site's history: the Greco-Roman spa city of Hierapolis was founded on the plateau directly above the terraces, and its ruins and Pamukkale are inscribed together as a single UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1988. Visitors today walk a marked barefoot route across the travertine, because shoes and stray footpaths scar deposits that take a very long time to reform.

Frequently asked questions

What are the white terraces at Pamukkale made of?
Travertine — a form of calcium carbonate. Warm mineral water rising through limestone carries dissolved calcium bicarbonate to the surface, and as the water releases carbon dioxide into the air it can no longer hold that mineral in solution, so it precipitates out as white stone. The deposit builds fastest at the rims where the water spills over, which is why each pool gradually walls itself in.

Why is this image harder than it looks to solve?
Because so much of it is the same pale, softly lit white. Colour sorting gets you almost nowhere across the lower half of the frame.
