Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Iceland

Fjaðrárgljúfur — the name means roughly "feather river canyon" — is a serpentine gorge in south east Iceland, just off the Ring Road near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The canyon is up to 100 metres (330 ft) deep and about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) long, with steep, winding walls that fold back on themselves above the Fjaðrá river running along the floor.

The gorge's origins trace back to the cold periods of the Ice Age, roughly two million years ago. Over that time, meltwater from retreating glaciers cut progressively through the canyon's palagonite — a soft volcanic rock formed from compressed ash and tuff — carving the sharp, moss-draped ridges and pinnacles visible today. A waterfall drops down the canyon's western wall, visible from an observation platform reached by a roughly one-mile hike along the eastern edge.

The canyon's bright green moss, layered rock pinnacles and the dark ribbon of river below give this scene a lot of natural structure to work with as a puzzle — the piece boundaries fall naturally along the canyon's folded walls, making it easier to orient edge pieces even in the busiest sections.
