Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Jökulsárlón sits at the foot of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull — Europe's largest ice cap — on Iceland's southeast coast. As the glacier calves, chunks of ice break free and drift across the lagoon in shades of white, blue, and translucent grey before some wash out to sea and land on the black-sand shore nearby, known as Diamond Beach for the ice that glitters against the dark sand.
The lagoon didn't exist a century ago. It began forming in the 1930s as the glacier retreated, and has grown to roughly 11 square kilometers — now Iceland's deepest lake at over 800 feet. That slow, ongoing retreat is why the lagoon keeps changing shape year to year, and why photographers return to it again and again.
The stillness of the water and the soft palette of the icebergs make this one of the more meditative images in the catalog — a good pick for a slower, unhurried puzzle session.
