Monument Valley at Sunset

Monument Valley is a cluster of sandstone buttes and mesas rising from a wide desert floor on the Navajo Nation, straddling the border between Arizona and Utah. The formations in this scene — including the paired towers known as the Mittens — are remnants of a once-continuous layer of rock, left standing after millions of years of wind and water wore away the softer stone around them.

The valley sits within the Colorado Plateau, a region whose slow geological uplift exposed layers of sedimentary rock to steady erosion. The deep red and orange color comes from iron oxide in the sandstone, which intensifies at sunrise and sunset as low-angle light rakes across the cliff faces. The land is part of the Navajo Nation and is managed as Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, established in 1958.

Monument Valley has also long been a backdrop for Western films, most famously several directed by John Ford starting in the 1930s, which helped cement its buttes as a visual shorthand for the American Southwest. In this puzzle, the stacked rock layers and long shadows thrown across the valley floor give plenty of natural lines to follow when sorting edge pieces from sky and silhouette.
