I went to Alex Trebek’s Estate Sale and bought his scroll saw to cut my own puzzles

So I went to Alex Trebek’s house yesterday. This isn’t the type of video that I normally make on here. But as we all know, he passed away a few months ago and I found out that there was going to be an estate sale at his house. And one of the perks of living in la is that it was really close by and I got to go so I feel like the overlap between people who, like puzzles and people who, like jeopardy, is about a circle. So I thought that all of you guys might like to hear about my estate sale adventure.

I did end up getting three things and the third thing is by far the most exciting so make sure you watch until the end to hear all about that and before I get into it um i’m not gonna show you everything that I saw in his House, you know, even though he was an icon, a legend, a very public figure, he was still a person and he was a pretty private person considering how public his job was and in them opening up his house just to the public. While, of course, i’m grateful that I got to go, it’s also like really sad that all of his stuff is just up for sale and random. People like me, who had zero connection to him, can just go stomping through his bedroom and his bathroom. So I am aware of how weird of a situation this is, but I did want to share my experience because I thought some of you might find it interesting. So the sale was running Thursday, Friday Saturday Sunday and there were definitely some articles about how long the line was.

So I got there around, I want to say, like 9, 45 or 10 and there was a line, but it wasn’t crazy. It was probably the length of like one city block. Luckily, the people that I was next to in line were really nice, and so we all chatted – and we had a little like line group going and the wait ended up being about an hour, maybe slightly over an hour which was totally fine. It was a really nice day out the street that he lives on. I guess there are a lot of hiking trails around, because we kept seeing hikers walking by and them being like.

What’s this line for? Why are so many nerds in line? They didn’t say that, but I could tell they were thinking that anyway, after an hour uh they. Finally let in the next batch of people – and I was like the last person of the batch that they let in so we all walked up to this beautiful house. This house, somebody in line that said it was worth seven million dollars today and I believe it this place was cavernous.

It’s like I mean I live in a decent sized apartment. It’s a two bedroom. I have enough space for what I need, but then you go to one of these houses in the hills and you just see how the mega rich live their lives and you’re like oh there’s, a whole other level up there that I am not at okay. So then we finally went inside and just look at these two grand staircases like. I cannot even tell you how beautiful this house was, but it’s like.

I just woke up on a random Friday and five hours later, I am in Alex tribe’s closet rifling through his hockey jerseys like what a weird day now, I knew that, since I went on the second day, anything that was specific to jeopardy or that had Alex’s name on it was definitely already going to be bought or would be really expensive. Sure enough, all of the shirts from this photo were nowhere to be found on the second day. So here’s the first thing that I did get. I made it into this den and, as you can see, I found a puzzle honestly. The puzzle itself is not anything special um, it’s from the brand color lux.

It’s a thousand-piece puzzle of this. What’s it called on carousel, I actually didn’t even open it up. So, let’s, oh it’s been done before. Do you think Alex Trebek himself put these four pieces together here you can see the view out to the backyard um they didn’t let anyone actually go out there, but we could see it through the windows just imagine laying out by that pool in the Hollywood hills so beautiful, and then I headed up this back staircase up there.

There was a whole home theater and a lounge and a bar. Of course I had to go behind the bar, which was really beautiful with all of the mirrors. I also saw this train car liquor bottle, which is really fun. You can get it on eBay. The one they had there in his house was priced way too high.

Okay. So then I made it back to this kind of back stairway and he had a whole bunch of like plaques on the walls um the key to the city different photos. All of these were in the three figures, so I really wanted something with his name on it, but I just couldn’t swing paying a hundred dollars or probably like 200 for the nice ones. Okay, so then we’re kind of in the like basement office area here is what his desk looked like. Like imagine, owning Alex Trebeck’s desk and desk chair.

Oh, I spotted another puzzle. This one was still sealed, though, so I didn’t pick that one up and then here’s a little statue of him, oh and then here’s the other thing I bought. So in this little, like almost like a closet of a room, there was a bookshelf in there and I found this brain teaser’s book and I was actually surprised. I thought he would have had more puzzle books like I was looking around for like crossword puzzle books. Sudoku books, that kind of thing – and there really weren’t any – I mean, who knows maybe they had already gotten bought by the time I got there.

But this was really one of the few puzzle books that I saw okay, so now we’re in the garage – and I bought one more very, very exciting thing. So apparently he had like a full-on shop down there. It was very organized he had all kinds of tools and other little findings. Oh here, you can see how everything is so meticulously. Labeled, okay, i’m gonna go grab the other thing that I bought.

I can’t believe I bought this just wait. Oh my god! Here it is here it is: oh, i’m gonna scratch up my table. This thing is so heavy, so I have been in the market for a scroll saw because I bought this one puzzle. Okay, hang on one more sec, so this is a vintage springbok puzzle with wooden pieces.

It’s really old. The box is like falling apart and when I got it on eBay, they were very upfront that one piece is missing, so you know I was thinking. Maybe one day I would get a scroll saw, learn how to cut my own wooden puzzles and make a replacement puzzle piece would be a good video right. Well, when I was in Alex tribe’s garage, I saw that he had a scroll saw and I was like: should I do it? Should I do it?

Am I gonna do it so I bought it for 80 and I don’t know I feel like Alex Trebek. Would be happy with someone like me, giving it a second life and using it to learn how to make wooden jigsaw puzzles? Of course, then I learned that this entire estate sale was cash only which I should have known, but I’d never actually been to an estate sale before this was my first one. So I checked my bag. I ended up having exactly eighty dollars cash with me, which was just enough for the saw, but I saw one of my line, friends inside and I then mowed her ten dollars and then she gave me a ten dollar bill.

So I was able to also get the puzzle and the book, but then getting this thing home was a whole adventure. It was a struggle to carry it out to the street um the security guard out there was definitely laughing at me. It was also a struggle. Just getting it into the uber and then once we were outside my apartment, I couldn’t even lift this thing off the floor of the car, so the driver had to get out and like pick it up for me and hand it to me, but I got it Here in the end, and now I’ll be able to say that i’m going to be cutting my own wooden puzzles on Alex tribe’s scroll saw. Of course, we all wish that Alex was still here instead, but he lived a long and incredible life and at the estate sale I heard some of the workers talking about how his family was just really glad that all of his stuff was going to people like Fans who really loved him and would really appreciate where all of it came from so as weird as this whole situation was i’m glad I went, i’m glad I got a scroll saw and that’s it.

So thank you for watching happy puzzling. I will see you all in the next one:
